Special Education
Learning Disability:
- The child demonstrates a severe discrepancy between ability and achievement in
the areas of reading, writing, math, listening comprehension, or oral
expression. - The child has severe underachievement in response to usual classroom
instruction.
Emotional or Behavior Disorder:
- A student has emotional or behavior disorder when the student demonstrates
behaviors that severely interfere with both school progress and home
adjustment. (ie severely withdrawn, disordered thought processs, aggressive,
hyperactive, or impulsive behaviors that are developmentally inappropritate. - The behavior adversely affects school progress and has been observed over an
extended period of time.
Speech and Language:
- The student has a speech and language disorder when a student has speech
concerns that interfere with oral communication and also understanding of the
spoken word.
Referral:
- A student is referred for special education help when they have
experienced difficulties with classroom work despite many interventions tried
by the teacher. - Special education teacher, classroom teacher, and other adults who know
the child review the child¡∫s academic progress and determine if a special
education referral is appropriate. - If special education is an appropriate referral the student is tested
in the areas of reading, writing and math. The student is also given ability
testing and possibly speech and language testing to determine if there are any
needs in the communication areas. The student may also be evaluated in the
behavior areas if that is a concern of the teaching staff. - The parents are involved in the entire process from giving permission
for the testing, reviewing the testing information, and approving of special
education placement for their child if the student qualifies.
Services:
- Work with students individually in the disability area (math, reading,
writing, behavior) - Small group instruction in the disability area (math, reading, writing,
behavior) - Work with students in the classroom
- Work with students to complete mainstream assignments
- Consult with mainstream teachers on students progress
